The charity is urging anyone with information to come forward.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after an abandoned dog was found tied to a tree near a burnt out car in freezing temperatures.

The four-year-old Belgian Malinois cross, named Demon, was discovered by a member of the public in a secluded patch of woodland in Mayfield, near Dalkeith, on February 13.

The walkers called the animal helpline after the dog, who was visibly underweight, was still there hours later.

Demon was taken to the vet for treatment before being transported to an animal shelter in Balerno.

The SPCA inspector said Demon hadn’t been spotted by the walker, he would have likely died.

Demon was microchipped and the charity was able to speak to his previous owner, who said they had rehomed him in January last year.

The charity has since tried to contact Demon’s present owner but has been unsuccessful. It is now appealing to the public for help.

It has urged anyone with information about the dog to call the helpline on 03000 999 999.
