Constitution Street was closed for around two hours on Friday afternoon after reports that an individual had become trapped under a tram at The Shore tram stop.

Images from the scene showed Constitution Street cordoned off with several ambulances, police vehicles and fire engines, with emergency services attending from about 1.25pm. An air ambulance was spotted flying overhead and landed on Leith Links.

Edinburgh Trams confirmed at 3.25pm the road had reopened and that services were running again. The operator said travellers may experience extended wait times as Edinburgh Trams worked to return to full service.

A post on X said: “Incident is now clear. There are extended wait times across the network. Thank you for your patience while resume full service.”

An eyewitness said of the incident: “Someone’s underneath the tram and they’re trying to get them out. I’ve been here for about 15 minutes.

The woman added: “I’ve lived in the area all my life and there’s been tram incidents but I’ve never seen anything like this.”

A woman who was on the tram told The Scotsman the vehicle was heading for the city centre before it stopped. “It came to an abrupt stop then we were all told to get off the tram,” she said.

A Police Scotland spokesperson earlier said: “Constitution Street is closed at the junction with Queen Charlotte Street in Edinburgh following a report of a concern for person received around 1.35pm on Friday, 7 November. Emergency services are in attendance and the public are advised to avoid the area.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was contacted.
