Dunbar Community Bakery: Fundraiser launched to save 'beloved' community bakery after fire

The bakery is hoping to raise £35,000 to fund essential repairs and pay its staff.

A popular bakery in East Lothian has launched a fundraiser after it was severely damaged in a fire last month.

The Dunbar Community Bakery, which is described as a “heart-and-soul hub” of the town’s main street, said the rear of the bakery and kitchen had been ravaged by the fire, which they said initially started in the roof of the building.

The street was closed for several hours as firefighters tackled the blaze.

The bakery has since praised the “heroic” actions of emergency services which they said had ensured no one was injured in the fire.

It has now set up a crowdfunder to help repair the damage and keep its staff employed while work takes place.

The staff wrote: “While the bakery is closed for repairs, it still faces ongoing bills, wages for staff, utilities and maintenance costs, all with no trading income.

“This isn’t just a shop. Since it opened in 2011, the bakery has been an award-winning cornerstone of the community, bringing fresh bread, cakes and warm welcomes to locals, visitors, and workers alike.

“It was started by local people and remains community-owned and staffed, supporting local jobs and apprenticeships, and helping regenerate our High Street.”

The bakery is hoping to raise £35,000 through the fundraiser. It has already surpassed £15,000 in donations.

The beloved shop’s bakes have been recognised in the World Championship Scotch Pie competition and the Scottish Bread Championship.
