Cats are second only to dogs when it comes to being the most popular pet - there are an estimated 10 million living in UK homes.
Before you think about adding a kitten to your family, it’s important to realise that there are myriad different breeds and types to choose from - each with their own common attributes.
Acording to The International Cat Association there are 73 ‘standardised breeds’, along with a bewildering number of ‘designer cat’ crosses - and the classic ‘moggy’ (a cat that’s an unknown mix of breeds).
Cats are often thought of as being less loving than their canine colleagues, but this isn’t necessarily the case.
In fact many breeds are known for their affectionate nature and are just as keen to snuggle up to their owners as a loving Labrador or cuddly Poodle.
Here are the 14 breeds of cat considered to be the most loving.

14. Exotic Shorthair
Sometimes known as the “lazy cat lover's Persian” the Exotic Shorthair is a breed of cat known for being sweet, calm, and very cuddly. They love lounging near - or on - their owers and being petted, making them great companions for relaxed homes. These cats can fair sleep! | Canva/Getty Images
