Cats are second only to dogs when it comes to being the most popular pet - there are an estimated 10 million living in UK homes.
Before you think about adding a kitten to your family, it’s important to realise that there are myriad different breeds and types to choose from - each with their own common attributes.
Acording to The International Cat Association there are 73 ‘standardised breeds’, along with a bewildering number of ‘designer cat’ crosses - and the classic ‘moggy’ (a cat that’s an unknown mix of breeds).
Cats are often thought of as being less loving than their canine colleagues, but this isn’t necessarily the case.
In fact many breeds are known for their affectionate nature and are just as keen to snuggle up to their owners as a loving Labrador or cuddly Poodle.
Here are the 14 breeds of cat considered to be the most loving.

9. Birman

10. American Shorthair
As the name would suggest, the American Shorthair is one of the most popular breeds of cat in the USA - it's pretty much the definition of 'housecat' on the other side of the Atlantic. Very adaptable and a perfect family pet, they tend to love being held - relishing all human contact. | Canva/Getty Images

11. Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex is generally a pretty active character - with lots of evergy. When they've had their fill of adventure though, they like nothing else than to curl up on your lap and have their soft, wavy coat stroked. | Canva/Getty Images

12. Burmese
Considering that the Siamese and Tonkinese are both affectionate - it's no surprise that the Burmese cat is too. Don't expect them to stick by your side at all times - they love going for a solo adventure - but they will always be back to demonstrate just how much they love you (lots). | Canva/Getty Images
