Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
Meanwhile, living in a city flat can be an issue when it comes to getting a new pup.
But there are several breeds that positively thrive in confined spaces - and are unlikely to bother the neighbours with barking.
Here are the 12 best dog breeds for those living in flats or apartments.

9. Boston Terrier
Friendly and well-mannered, Boston Terriers are compact and low-maintenance. They enjoy playtime but are relaxed indoors and generally good with neighbours. | Canva/Getty Images

10. Havanese
Named after Cuba's capital city, the Havanese are born to live in the city. They only need moderate exercise and are otherwise happy to just explore your home. They're also not big barkers, but shouldn't be left alone for more than 3-4 hours. | Canva/Getty Images

11. Toy Poodle
Highly intelligent and compact, Toy Poodles suit apartment living well. They’re easy to train, low-shedding, and content with mental stimulation and walks. If you have a larger flat then you might even want to upsize to a Miniature Poodle. | Canva/Getty Images

12. Pug
The tiny pug is perfectly happy living in a flat. A couple of moderate walks a day will keep them exercised and then they'll be happy napping on the couch. | Canva/Getty Images
