Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
Meanwhile, living in a city flat can be an issue when it comes to getting a new pup.
But there are several breeds that positively thrive in confined spaces - and are unlikely to bother the neighbours with barking.
Here are the 12 best dog breeds for those living in flats or apartments.

5. Yorkshire Terriers
Yorkshire Terriers may be energetic but, due to their diminutive size, most of their exercising can be done indoors. They are also happy being left alone for long periods, although some Yorkies do have a tendency to bark, so beware if you have thin walls and impatient neighbours. | Canva/Getty Images

6. Bulldog
Another medium-sized pooch that doesn't need much space is the Bulldog. They are very good-natured, loving, low-maintenance and quiet. | Canva/Getty Images

7. Miniature Schnauzer
Smart and adaptable, Miniature Schnauzers do well in city flats as long as you have time to exercise them daily. They’re alert without being overly noisy and bond closely with owners. | Canva/Getty Images

8. Whippet
As long as you have access to a safe and fenced-off area to exercise them, Whippets make a great pet for flat owners. Once exercised they have low energy-levels, tend to be happy to be left alone, and make very little noise. | Canva/Getty Images
