Admittedly some of the shows that are billed as 'free', particularly at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, ask for a donation after the show - but if you don't like them you don't have to put your hand in your pocket.
Meanwhile other events really are free, including a great selection at the Edinburgh International Festival.
And if you're a bit clever about it you can enjoy other highlights without spending a penny - from cinema screenings to art galleries.
Here are 12 of them.

9. Try the other Free Fringe
Fringe-goers don't have to worry about the history of why there are now two different free fringes (or the associated politics) - they can just be happy at the extra choice they have. The Free Festival began in 2004 and was sert up by Laughing Horse Comedy promoters and operates from pubs and other venues across the city - most notably The Counting House (pictured) and The Free Sisters. Pretty much the same rules apply - watch a show and then pay what you want at the end. You can pick up a full programme from any of their venues. | Google Maps

10. Take a chance at The Monkey Barrel
The Monkey Barrel has become known as one of the best places to see stand-up comedy in Edinburgh - both during and outwith the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. During August you can book a ticket in advance to guarantee a seat or just turn up and see if there are any spares - on a 'pay what you want' model. Of course, many of the shows sell out well in advance (particularly at weekends), but it's always worth a shot. | Contributed

11. Finish the festivals in style
On the final weekend of the Edinburgh International Festival (August 26-27), the gardens at Charlotte Square will be open to the public as a musical oasis, where a soundscape of recorded music from the 2023 Festival classical music concerts will play throughout the garden. The soundscape will also feature Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony alongside archival recordings. | Canva/Getty Images

12. Take a break
It may not be part of the festivals, but the National Museum of Scotland is right in the middle of the August madness and is a great place to escape the bustle...for free. With everything from dinosaurs and Dolly the Sheep, to the Lewis Chessmen, the Chambers Street museum is a favourite for those looking for a fun day out with their family. | Canva/Getty Images
