Under the Radar: Rahul.mp3
Rahul.mp3 weaves a refreshingly wide range of influences into his music, write Olaf Furniss and Derick Mackinnon

Nominated for this year’s Sound of Young Scotland prize, Rahul.mp3 grew up listening to his mother’s diverse tastes, which ranged from Bollywood to George Michael, and soon developed a personal penchant for Madonna and Bjork. However, it was Nicki Minaj who transformed him into a superfan and inspired him to begin dabbling with beats and making remixes.
In 2023 he launched the scandal.gla club in Glasgow, which he describes as a queer night for people who want to listen to global sounds, including bhangra and Brazilian funk. The night has since been featured in Vogue and The Face, as well as providing a platform for his DJ sets.
In July Rahul.mp3 released his first single via the Mañana Electronic label, and the release of the follow up, Big Dog, will coincide with the latest scandal.gla night at Stereo on 14 November. It will include his live show, using electronic drum pads, and he returns to the decks as the support act for Chicago rapper CupcakKe for her Edinburgh and Glasgow shows on 23 and 24 of this month, see https://ra.co/dj/rahul.mp3
Olaf Furniss and Derick Mackinnon run music industry seminar and social night Born To Be Wide, see www.borntobewide.co.uk
