'Something to build on' - Scottish golfer on his start to DP World Tour season
‘Decent week’ for David Law as Spaniard David Puig wins BMW Australian PGA Championship
David Law gave himself “something to build on” for the Crown Australian Open as the Aberdonian marked his return to the DP World Tour with a “decent” start to the new season.
In his first outing since being among three Scots to graduate from the HotelPlanner Tour last month, the 34-year-old Aberdonian signed for three sub-par rounds in the BMW Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland in Brisbane.

Finishing with a five-under-par total, Law ended up in a tie for 41st behind David Puig as he became the second Spaniard after Seve Ballesteros to land the title.
“It was an amazing week,” said Law, speaking of the event in general. “I was here this time last year and my mindset was very different compared to what it was this time last year, having lost my card and missed getting back at the Q School.
‘Here this year with bit of excitement’
“So I am here this year with a bit of excitement ahead of the new year and it was good to get four rounds in. I could have finished a little better obviously, but, yeah, a decent week.”
A winner on Australian soil in his rookie season in 2019, Law landed two triumphs on the HotelPlanner Tour last season to finish second behind South African JC Ritchie in the Road to Mallorca Rankings.
“My game was a bit hot and cold this week,” he added. “It was good in spells and not great in spells really. I thought the first 12 holes on Thursday and then the last nine holes today were good and, in between, it was not so great.
“But it was something to build on for next week, which will be an exciting week (with Rory McIlroy joining a posse of home starts at Royal Melbourne). Last year was my first Australian Open I had played and I had a decent week in Victoria, which was amazing.
“Next week is going to be even bigger and I’ve heard so many great things about the course, so it is a week I am really looking forward to.”

Puig closed with a bogey-free 66 to finish on 18 under, winning by two shots as the 23-year-old landed a maiden DP World Tour triumph on his 15th start. "It feels unbelievable, especially winning here in Australia,” he admitted. “They have awesome golf so I'm really excited and happy.”
Ballesteros landed his win at Royal Melbourne in 1981, succeeding Sam Torrance as the champion. “I never saw him (Seve) play in person, which kind of sucks to be honest, but obviously you watch replays of every major he won and kind how he did and his little movie and show that there is, seen it at least three or four times,” added Puig.
“He’s such a big figure for Spanish golf and you see also Jon [Rahm] and pretty much every player but kind of close with John Rahm and the stories that he has and all he knows about what Seve accomplished too and everything.”
Daniel Young and Cameron Adam, the two other Scots in the field at Royal Queensland, missed the cut on one over and three over respectively. They are both in the Crown Australian Open line up as well.
