Scott Henderson rolls back years to lead Scottish PGA at West Kilbride

Former DP World Tour Rookie of Year out in front in Tartan Tour’s flagship event

Scott Henderson underlined his competitive longevity at West Kilbride as the Aberdeen veteran eased into the halfway lead in the Ramsdens Currency Scottish PGA Championship.

The 56-year-old Tartan Tour stalwart added a three-under 68 to his opening 69 for a five-under aggregate and has a one shot advantage over Dominic Bradburn, Graeme McDougall, Graeme Robertson and the defending champion, Paul O’Hara.

Henderson, the former DP World Tour rookie of the year, was out in the very first group of the day and joined the overnight leader, Bradley Neil, at the top of the standings with a spirited round in testing conditions.

While Neil slithered backwards with a three-over 75 during his second circuit, and a host of others flirted with top spot but couldn’t haul themselves to the five-under mark, Henderson found himself still perched at the summit come the end of play.

Henderson has never won the Scottish PGA Championship, but he finished fourth last year, was runner-up in 2003 and let a six-shot lead slip in the final round of the 2004 showpiece.

The advancing years have not dulled his enduring golfing instincts, and the former Northern Open champion is still hoping for a silver lining in the Tartan Tour’s flagship event.

“I just love playing and you still come to these events to compete,” said Henderson, who has already won the Scottish Senior PGA title which is played over 36-holes and runs in conjunction with the main championship

“The competition keeps you going. Golf is a special game and there are many ways to play it. It’s about carving out a score somehow. It’s not all about hitting perfect shots because golf is never perfect. Age doesn’t come into it. If I play good golf to the standard I know I can, then I have a chance.”

There are plenty in with a chance as some of the Tartan Tour’s big guns manoeuvred themselves into position. O’Hara, the reigning champion and the winner the last time the Scottish PGA Championship was held at West Kilbride in 2022, admitted he was “hanging on in there” after a two-under 69 left him lurking on four-under.

In-form Graeme Robertson in the hunt

Bishopbriggs pro McDougall, meanwhile, bolstered his assault with four birdies in a row to start and eventually posted a fine 66.

Robertson, a back-to-back champion in 2023 and 2024, wasn’t at his best but still managed to winkle out a 69 to stay in the hunt.

“There were a few loose shots out there and I wasn’t swinging it that well over the last few holes,” said in-form Robertson, who made a couple of good par saves on the 15th and 16th to keep himself in the thick of it.

“I was just happy to get in at two-under. It wasn’t quite there but there’s certainly no damage done and I’m in a good position with lots of golf to play.”

Bradburn is a relative newcomer to the Scottish PGA Championship, but the 28-year-old barged his way into the mix with a tidy, bogey-free 67 for his four-under tally.

The pick of his four birdies came on the eighth where the former Scottish Young Professionals’ champion rolled in a 20-foooter. “That one got the round going,” said Bradburn, who made further gains at 11 and 13.

East Renfrewshire’s Gavin Hay conjured the round of the day with a six-under 65 which propelled him into a share of sixth with Chris Maclean and Paul McKechnie.

Hay, who will make his debut for GB&I in next month’s PGA Cup, illuminated his round with a mighty putt of 50-feet for an eagle on the third. “That kick-started the day and after a disappointing first round, I’ve got myself back into it,” said Hay.
