Veteran Springbok reveals half-time plans that helped Bulls conquer Glasgow Warriors
Handre Pollard and Johan Ackermann react after impressive performance secures 22-21 win at Murrayfield.
Bulls stand-off Handré Pollard may have missed three penalties in their 22-21 URC semi-final win over Glasgow Warriors, but the veteran Springbok says he would have missed three more as long as they still won.
The 32-year-old orchestrated the attack for the visitors at Murrayfield as they snatched a place in the Grand Final away from Franco Smith’s side in defiant fashion. He spoke to Premier Sports after the game in a buoyant mood.
“It's easy to just start kicking to the corner but the right play at that time was to kick at goal,” said Pollard. “If I had to miss another three for us to get the win, I'd have done it!
“Pretty special” for Pollard and Bulls to reach URC final
“We sorted our defence and our set piece, Warriors are so good off those first phase strikes and it's so tough to defend. So, we came up with some plans for the second half.
“We weren't dominant, but we contained it at least, which gave us a chance to set our defensive line and I think that helped a lot. It's a special group, a special bunch of guys, a lot of guys who have seen here a long time and are leaving at the end of the season.
“We want to make it special for them as much as we can. We're alive and going to the final which is unbelievable from where we were in December after losing six or seven on the trot. To be here now is pretty special and I think it says a lot about the character of the team.
Also speaking to Premier Sports after the match, Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann added: “So proud of the team and the players. They stayed calm at half-time and showed a lot of character and that's all we ask so, yeah, very pleased.
"I'm lost for words. Glasgow played so well in that first half and they really put us to the sword. A lot of the leaders stood up.
"My challenge to them was, 'it's 21-10 boys and we couldn't play worse so let's go score one try and see it from then'. As it happened, we scored one try and then game on."
