Hooker follows in younger brother’s footsteps as third academy graduate to secure capital future
Edinburgh have continued to secure the future of the club with hooker Jerry Blyth-Lafferty becoming the latest academy graduate to sign a professional contract.
The 22-year old joins Jack Brown, Hector Patterson, and younger brother Ollie in putting pen to paper in recent weeks. Blyth-Lafferty, a Scotland under 20 international, makes the step up alongside his sibling with the pair having both debuted in December’s 1872 Cup clash with Glasgow Warriors at Murrayfield.
On the latest signing, Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt said: “Jerry has a brilliant attitude. He is a player we’re looking forward to working with more in our senior squad, and see how he can kick on from where he is now.
Edinburgh head coach “excited” to see what young forward can do
“He has taken his opportunities well this season, and has displayed a maturity beyond his years. I'm excited to see what he can do in an Edinburgh jersey in the future.”
Blyth-Lafferty is a product of of Boroughmuir RFC and joined Edinburgh’s pro-academy ahead of the 2023/24 season. He also featured for Emerging Scotland in last autumn’s match against Tonga XV, putting in a solid performance against an experienced international side.
“I’m buzzing,” said the hooker. “It's everything I’ve dreamed of. I grew up wanting to play for Edinburgh.
“Representing my city and my home means everything to me. It’s also so special to be able to pull on the jersey alongside my brother.
“We’ve already had some great memories playing together, and I can’t wait to make more with this team.”
The Blyth-Lafferty brothers, who both made their debut in the 21-3 defeat to Warriors, are Edinburgh caps #1348 and #1349 respectively. They join the likes of Mike, Alex and David Blair as well as twins Alex and Ben Toolis and current teammates Matt And Tom Currie as siblings to have represented the club.
The duo became the first brothers to play together for Scotland U20 when lifting the World U20 trophy together at Hive Stadium in 2024. The older Blyth-Lafferty brother has made five senior appearances this season, including a composed first start away at Leinster in January.
