The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award (or SPOTY) was first held in 1954 when around 14,500 voters decided (controversially, in retrospect) to crown Christopher Chataway over fellow runner Roger Bannister.
Since then the winners read like a roll call of British sporting greats, with the likes of Mo Farah, Ian Botham, Nick Faldo, Steve Redgrave, Lewis Hamilton, Kelly Holmes and David Beckham all lifting the trophy.
Several Scots have also lifted the trophy, including Sir Andy Murray (a record three times), Sir Jackie Stewart, Liz McColgan and Sir Chris Hoy.
Last year saw athlete Keely Hodgkinson take the main prize, while dart prodigy Luke Littler came runner-up and also claimed the Young SPOTY Award - which he’s already been shortlisted for again this year.
This year’s ceremony will be held at Salford’s Media City on Thursday, December 18, and broadcast live on BBC One.
It looks like Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is the one to beat after his win at the Masters completed his Grand Slam of the Majors, but several of the history-making Lionesses football team and Formula One ace Lando Norris might have something to say about that.
We’re currently waiting for the shortlist for the main prize to be announced, with the winner voted on by the general public throughout the evening.
Here are the current 10 favourites to be crowned SPOTY 2025.

5. Luke Littler - 25/1
Darts prodigy Luke 'The Nuke' Littler won the Young Sports Personality of the Year trophy at last year's ceremony - which he has been shortlisted for again in 2025 - also coming second in the main award. He's since won his first World Championship, thrown numerous nine-darters, is the biggest name in his sport and recently became world number one. He has dropped from being second favourite to the 25/1 fifth favourite - perhaps because his sport's biggest tournament is held just after the SPOTY trophy is presented each year. | Getty Images

6. Ellie Kildunne - 50/1
Ellie Kildunne was part of the English team that won this year's Rugby World Cup and was last year named World Rugby Women's 15s Player of the Year at the World Rugby Awards. She's a 50/1 shot for SPOTY. | Getty Images

7. Scott McTominay - 50/1
Also priced at 50/1 for SPOTY 2025 is Scottish footballing hero Scott McTominay. The Napoli player's dramatic overhead kick in Scotland's final qualifier for the World Cup lit the touchpaper on what would end up being a memorable win that sent his country straight to the biggest footballing tournament on the planet. | AFP via Getty Images

8. Alessia Russo - 80/1
Yet another Lioness in the running for the SPOTY (they must be favourite for Team of the Year), Arsenals's Alessia Russo is the current FWA Women's Footballer of the Year. She's 80/1 to raise the BBC trophy. | Arsenal FC via Getty Images
