Niall Shiels Donegan secures automatic spot in Walker Cup team

California-based player among five players to tie down berth in Great Britain & Ireland team

California-based Scot Niall Shiels Donegan has secured a second consecutive Walker Cup appearance as one of the automatic qualifiers for next month’s contest at Lahinch.

Shiels Donegan will be representing Great Britain & Ireland once again on 5-6 September after earning his spot in Dean Robertson’s team through the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

With the four highest-ranked players in the standings earning automatic qualification, it was job done for 18th-placed Shiels Donegan, who landed his maiden win on the US college circuit earlier this year.

The University of North Carolina player joined English trio Tyler Weaver (No 2), Luke Poulter (No 5) and Elliot Baker (No 16) in clinching coveted berths under their own steam.

The quartet joined Ireland’s Stuart Grehan, who secured his place in the ten-man line up through winning The R&A Amateur Championship at Royal Liverpool in June.

The final five spots will be filled by captain’s picks, with Robertson, who is bidding to make it second-time lucky after seeing his side lose to the Americans at Cypress Point in California last year, revealing his selections on 18 August.

Blairgowrie’s Connor Graham, who has played in the last two editions, is a strong contender to represent GB&I once again. He sits 25th in the global standings.

Shiels Donegan, who reached the semi-finals last year, and Graham are both gearing up for next week’s US Amateur Championship at Merion, where the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying starts on Monday.

Meanwhile, Scotland, minus their two star players, lost 13.5-7.5 to England in a keenly-contested opening-day match in the Men’s/Women’s Home Internationals at Woodbrook Golf Club in Ireland.

With former Open champion Shane Lowry among the spectators, hosts Ireland beat Wales 12.5-8.5 in the other first-day match at the County Wicklow venue.

In the Boys/Girls’ event at Monifieth, Scotland also lost to England, going down 11.5-9.5 in another closely-contested tussle in the second round of matches. Ireland beat Wales 15.5-5.5 in the other game, leaving the Scots, having also lost to Ireland, facing Wales in a wooden-spoon clash on the final day.
