Alex Lowry handed path to unlocking 'huge potential' at Motherwell as ex Hibs star turns 'exciting' signing
The former Hibs and Dundee United midfielder has signed for Motherwell as an ex-Rangers prospect impresses.
Alfred Johansson hopes Dylan Levitt’s transfer arrival can take the pressure off Motherwell’s game-heavy midfield core.
The former Hibs and Dundee United player has signed for the Steelmen for an undisclosed fee from EFL side Leyton Orient. Manager Johansson has already had to navigate 10 competitive matches this term amid involvement in Conference League that ended last week in play-off round defeat at Bundesliga club Freiburg.
Oscar Priestman was ruled out injured last month after playing every game prior to his injury in the home leg of their third round qualifier second leg with HJK Helsinki and engine room teammate Lukas Fadinger has played at least an hour in all but one match. Joe Hodge has also had to take on substantial minutes since signing from FC Tondela and Levitt’s arrival will ease their workload.
Who have Motherwell signed from Leyton Orient?
“We’re very excited to have Dylan here,” explained Johansson at his press conference on Tuesday ahead of Motherwell’s Premiership clash with Dundee United at Fir Park. “I think Dylan is a really good central midfielder who, on top of being really good, has experience of the Scottish Premiership. So, yeah, we're all very pleased with having him here. I don't think that I want to compare him with the others. I think I want to say that I think Dylan is a really good player that can break lines.
“He is good at finding the pockets with his passes. He has long range as well. On top of that, he is a very mobile player. He moves well around the pitch, but you could say the same of Oscar Priestman, right? So, I think Dylan is a very good addition to the squad. He'll train today and he'll be ready for Wednesday. And obviously, we need all hands on deck because there's been a lot of games the past close to two months where Lukas Fadinger, Oscar Priestman and then after Oscar being injured and Joe Hodge coming in, it's been Joe taking all of the minutes. And yeah, that's sustainable for a period of time, but not for too long. And we saw that with Oscar."
Another midfield option for Johansson is Alex Lowry. The Rangers academy graduate signed on loan earlier this summer from Wycombe Wanderers and his assist for Tawanda Maswanhise’s goal was the highlight of an eye-catching display during Sunday’s 3-3 thriller with St Mirren. Johansson can’t fault Lowry’s work ethic as he seeks to gain a consistent 90-minute display from the former Rangers playmaker.

How is Alex Lowry doing at Motherwell?
“There's so much more to get out of that boy,” added Johansson. “He has such a huge potential and I think he's doing really... he's like the team on Sunday. He has he has moments of brilliance and we need to see a game of consistency and brilliance from Alex and we will get that. He has been playing good games but there's more to take from him and it's more to take from everyone. It's more to take from the team and we will we will work hard for for achieving that."
“He's been working hard and he's been humble and he's been gelling with the group in a really nice way. I have an excellent dialogue with the boy. I think he's in a place right now where he's contributing also to the environment in the locker room with a smile on his face, cracking jokes, and just being really, really positive guy. So he's in a good spot and that's all I can assess."
