Scottish football league set for dramatic final day as three teams sweat over future

County could mount great escape as Airdrie and Morton fight for survival

Ross County will hope to avoid automatic relegation from the Championship when the curtain is drawn on Scottish football’s second tier on Friday night.

After dropping down from the Premiership, the Dingwall outfit have an endured a miserable campaign and are staring a second consecutive relegation in the face going into the final round of fixtures.

Ross County sit bottom of the table on 34 points, with Airdrieonians in ninth on 35 points and Morton in eighth on 37 points. They are the only teams involved in the relegation scrap.

County have struggled all season under first Don Cowie at the beginning of the season and then Tony Docherty, who took over at the start of September and was axed in December. Stuart Kettlewell came in for his second spell in charge of the Staggies, but have only flickered into life in their past two matches, beating Ayr 2-1 and Morton 4-0 - both at home.

They are on the road on Friday night when they take on Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park. The Kirkcaldy side sit fifth and cannot break into the promotion play-offs, although Dougie Imrie’s men could be overtaken by Queen’s Park should they defeat second-placed Partick Thistle at Firhill.

Only a win is likely to do for Ross County, given their goal difference is -20 to Airdrie’s -14. They are guaranteed at best a place in the League One play-offs, as because Morton and Airdrie meet at Cappielow, one of those teams is guaranteed to end the night on at least 38 points. The most County can reach is 37.

After losing 4-0 to Ross County last weekend, Ian Murray’s Morton have been dragged right into the relegation dogfight - and their goal difference now down to -16. A point against his former club will be enough to secure another season in the second tier for Murray, who took over in Greenock earlier this season, but a defeat could consign them to the play-offs or even automatic relegation should the goal difference swing against them.

Morton face an Airdrie side that won at home to Ayr last time out to keep their own survival hopes alive. Should they prevail in Renfrewshire, they are guaranteed to finish eighth. A draw or a defeat might be enough to stay in ninth, depending on what happens in Fife between Raith and Ross County.

Elsewhere, champions St Johnstone take on Ayr at Somerset Park, while Dunfermline Athletic host Arbroath - the first of three matches in a week between the two teams, as they will meet in the quarter-finals of the Premiership play-offs. If the Pars win, they will go above Arbroath and take home advantage for the second leg.
