Former Kilmarnock winger earns comparison to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich icon after superb strike
Dinamo have won four, drawn one and lost one of their six league matches since his arrival at the start of the season with Armstrong a key part of the set-up. The 28-year-old winger scored both of his side’s goals in a 2-1 victory over FC Universitatea Cluj at the weekend.
The first saw him cut inside from the right wing to get the ball to his stronger left foot before dribbling and curling a superb strike into the far corner. It was a move synonymous with former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid winger Robben during his playing career.
After the match, the former Raith Rovers and Ross County man described the 96-times capped Netherlands international as his favourite player while playfully laughing off the comparison. He said to the journalist who made the observation that: “He was my favourite player as a kid. I'm not as good as Arjen Robben, but I'll take that, thank you.”
Armstrong’s second goal was also a well placed strike from outside the box, this time low and to the keeper’s right after his teammates had won possession back high up the pitch. It capped off an excellent afternoon for the one-time Wolverhampton Wanderers player who also spoke about the influence of the new coaching team and how he is enjoying his football at the moment.
He said: “It's a pleasing victory and it's good to get another three points. When the new coach came in, from day one he was trying to implement his style of play, his tactics. The coaching staff are brilliant, they're brilliant to work with every single day. They're making a good environment, they help with everything, they don't stop, they're always there. I'm really enjoying my time working with them. I'm feeling good, I'm learning the new style with the coach.
“I'm playing a different role, which I'm learning every time. The coach is always on me to improve, so I just need to listen to the advice they can give me. A few goals and four assists, so far so good, It seems to be working for me. It's more just the way they are with me, the way they help me learn.
“They're never happy. They're not settling, they're always pushing for more, they're always demanding more. As a football player, that's exactly what we want. I'm just taking it game by game, we'll take it to the next game when it comes.”
