Rangers exit confirmed as £2.5m signing has remainder of contract ripped up

Winger departs Rangers permanently after struggle for game time

Rangers have confirmed the departure of winger Rabbi Matondo to Norwegian side SK Brann.

The Wales international made the permanent move on Norway's transfer deadline day after the Ibrox club agreed to rip up his contract two months before it was due to expire.

Matondo has played just three times this season, all of them as a substitute. His final appearance came in an 8-0 win over Queen’s Park in February. The 25-year-old former Manchester City youth player arrived at Ibrox from Schalke in a £2.5million transfer in July 2022 and scored eight goals in 70 appearances, most of which were off the bench.

He spent the second half of last season on loan with Hannover in Bundesliga 2 and missed the first half of the current campaign with a knee injury, but was included in the Wales squad for this month’s World Cup play-offs.

Matondo's most memorable contribution to Rangers was a long-range equaliser against Celtic at Ibrox in April 2024. He also helped the club qualify for their first Champions League in over a decade with his goal in a qualifier against PSV a year earlier.

A brief statement from the Ibrox club read: “Everyone at Rangers wishes Rabbi the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
