'Not proceed': Major Rangers U-turn as January arrival from EPL club falls through
Academy chief’s appointment at Ibrox won’t happen as both parties agree on switch
Jonathan Hunter-Barrett will not be joining Rangers as the club’s new academy director after both parties reached a mutual agreement to pull the plug on his appointment.
Hunter-Barrett was due to join Rangers from Wolves at the start of next month after he was identified by Kevin Thelwell as the man to head up the Ibrox academy. However, since he was offered the job, Thelwell has been axed as sporting director and the Molineux outfit have made some changes to their operational structure.
As a result, Rangers announced on Monday morning that Hunter-Barrett, 35, will not take up post in the new year and say further update will be made in due course.

A statement from the club read: “Rangers FC can confirm that, by mutual agreement, the planned appointment of Jonathan Hunter-Barrett as academy director will not proceed.
“Throughout the recruitment process, Jonathan engaged with the club in a constructive and professional manner, and we wish him well for the future.
“We remain fully committed to enhancing our youth structure and player pathways, and we will now progress alternative plans for the Academy leadership team, with further updates to follow in due course.”
The U-turn on Hunter-Barrett’s arrival at Ibrox is yet another major change at Rangers over the past two months. Head coach Russell Martin was sacked in early October after four months in post and since then, chairman Andrew Cavenagh has sacked Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart.
Rangers are currently fourth in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind current leaders Hearts. They also have one point from five Europa League matches.
