'Outstanding candidate': SPFL club makes key managerial appointment - but won't be in dugout this weekend
Former Hibs and Rangers man returns to football in Greenock
Morton have appointed Ian Murray as their new manager on a contract until June 2027.
The 44-year-old former Dumbarton, St Mirren and Airdrie boss has been out of the game since being sacked by Raith in August 2024. Murray replaces Dougie Imrie, who left to take charge of Championship rivals Rovers in late November. Gary Miller, who has been in interim charge of Ton, will stay on as Murray’s assistant.
“After interviewing Ian, it was clear to see his passion, hunger and determination to succeed,” said director Graham Barr. “This, alongside his track record in management, made him the outstanding candidate for the job. This was a critical appointment and one we wanted to take the time to get right, and we firmly believe we have the best candidate in Ian to take the club forward.”

Former Hibs and Rangers defender Murray will watch Saturday’s match against Partick Thistle at Firhill from the stands before taking charge of the team next week. His first game will be next weekend at home to Dunfermline Athletic.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be appointed manager of Greenock Morton,” said Murray. “It’s a real honour to be given this opportunity at such a proud club, and I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting the players, the staff, and of course the supporters, and getting to work as quickly as possible. There’s a lot to be excited about, and I’m eager to give everything I have to move the club forward together.”
Gary Miller, who has been holding the fort in an interim basis, will work alongside Murray as his assistant.
