Scott McTominay heart surgery recovery plan revealed as Napoli chief explains contract situation
Serie A side to keep Scotland internationalist for long-term
Napoli do not expect Scotland internationalist Scott McTominay to be back in action until mid-October due to his upcoming heart surgery.
McTominay is due to have a procedure in the coming days in London to correct a mild benign arrhythmia and while the midfielder is very relaxed about the operation - “I’m fine, the procedure was something I’d planned to do with the club for quite a while” - he will spend a period of time on the sidelines.
Capped 73 times by Scotland, it was already known that McTominay would miss the national team’s four upcoming Nations League matches against Slovenia (x2), Switzerland and North Macedonia, as well as Napoli fixtures.

And now the Serie A side’s sporting director Giovanni Manna has provided a detailed update on when McTominay could return to action.
“It will take 28 days for sporting fitness because he will take anticoagulant drugs,” said Manna. “For two weeks, the player will rest and then resume competitive activity without contact.”
Napoli struggled at the weekend without their talisman, losing 3-2 to champions Internazionale. It was their second successive Italian top-flight defeat in a row.
Manna is keen to tie down the 29-year-old on a new contract, but admitted that talks are not yet progressing.
“McTominay’s contract renewal?” added Manna in an interview with DAZN. “Scott said he doesn’t know if he’ll renew at this time.
“He has a two-year contract, we want to do it, and he wants to do it too. It’s not always easy to make things coincide, but we’re trying.”
