'It's all or nothing now': Hearts fans face tense wait for possible title glory after Jambos pack into Gorgie pubs

Hearts fans face a nervous wait for this season’s climax with the stage now set for a final-day thriller against Celtic

Just a few hundred metres from Tynecastle Park, the tension was palpable as Jambos stood shoulder-to-shoulder in a jam-packed Diggers pub to watch a possible title-winning moment on Wednesday night.

Beneath the sounds of chants and cheers, there was a low grumble of frustration among supporters as well a furious scrolling of phones to refresh the Motherwell vs Celtic score.

It could have been the fairytale ending to the season, winning at Tynecastle, but Hearts were forced to wait just a bit longer to see if they will be crowned Scottish Premiership champions for the first time since 1960.

Many of those watching on the multiple screens around the rammed pub won’t even have been alive or would’ve been too young to remember this huge moment.

The highs of Hearts slipping three goals past Falkirk and chants of “stand up and sing for Motherwell” after they took the lead at Fir Park and again equalised in the second half, turned into a cagey, nervous atmosphere as Jambos patiently waited for a ‘Well winner.

But fate - or VAR - had other plans.

Nerves turned to spitting anger as television screens across the Diggers showed the moment Celtic were awarded what has become an extremely contentious penalty in extra time.

One frustrated supporter, who earlier had wiped tears of joy away as Celtic fell behind at Fir Park and Hearts took the lead at Tynecastle, said: “You just knew that was going to happen. It was inevitable.

“The good thing is, no matter what, it goes to the last day. This isn’t the end yet.”

Wednesday night’s results have set up what promises to be a thrilling final day of the season for football fans across the spectrum.

But for some Hearts fans, the hopes of a league title going down to the last day is traumatising.

Their last shot at league glory came in 1986. The Jambos went into the final day of the season ahead of Celtic with a final day showdown against Dundee at Den’s Park - all they needed was a point to secure the league.

But Hearts eventually lost 2-0 to Dundee, while Celtic overtook on goal difference after thrashing St Mirren 0-5 and swooped in to claim the league title at the last minute.

These old wounds have left scars and expectant supporters are hoping Derek McInnes and his men rewrite history.

The nervous Jambo said: “We can’t have heartbreak again, it just can’t happen.

“It’s all or nothing on Saturday now.”
