Ten of Europe’s ‘elite’ clubs, plus Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, released a statement late on Sunday night confirming their desire to form a breakaway competition which aims to have up to 20 teams taking part.

The plans have been condemned by Uefa who have threatened to ban players from international football.

Hibs’ 16-year-old striker Ethan Laidlaw, who signed a professional contract back in February, tweeted: “Scottish football>>>anything else now.”

Meanwhile, Hearts striker Boyce compared what is happening to the popular EA Sports game Fifa.

He tweeted: “These boys trying to play ultimate team in real life? Madness.”

John McGinn however, opted for an old school reference.

He said: “Pro evolution names til the end of the season for them. Man Blue v Merseyside Red.”
