Celtic v St Mirren fall guy gets huge backing from teammate in powerful social media post against trolls

Mullen had to come off injured in defeat at Hampden

St Mirren midfielder Alex Gogic has leapt to the defence of teammate Ryan Mullen after online trolls targeted the injured goalkeeper in the wake of Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final defeat by Celtic.

Mullen started for the Buddies at Hampden after first-choice keeper Shamal George was ruled out due to an ankle issue, but picked up an injury within the opening stages of the game and had to be replaced himself on 14 minutes by 17-year-old rookie Grant Tamosevicius.

St Mirren were already a goal down at that point after Mullen’s dwelled on a back pass for too long and saw his clearance charged down by Celtic forward Daizen Maeda in the first minute. The 25-year-old looked uncomfortable thereafter and left the pitch with a thigh injury not long afterwards.

His manager Craig McLeish backed Mullen after the game, but some St Mirren fans were less than impressed with the keeper and criticised his actions - especially with Tamosevicius being thrown into such an occasion with no experience. While the teenager fared well, Celtic ultimately won the tie 6-2 after extra time.

Gogic, one of the senior players in the St Mirren squad, took to social media on Monday morning to back Mullen, hitting out at some of the supporters who had questioned the player’s integrity.

Writing on X, Gogic said: “I have seen some disgraceful tweets about Ryan Mullen after the game yesterday. Ryan is a top goalkeeper and gives everything on and off the pitch and by no means did he want to leave the pitch yesterday.

“Every player makes mistakes it comes with the job and I’ve made plenty. Unfortunately for Ryan yesterday he was unable to play on despite persevering at first. He does not deserve any of the negativity and criticism he is getting, it’s disgusting.

“Im so disappointed that majority is from our own fans. As a club we win together and lose together.”

McLeish revealed after the match that St Mirren may need to explore the emergency loan market for a goalkeeper should Mullen and George be ruled out of Saturday’s Premiership match against Livingston. The Buddies are currently tenth and battling against relegation.
