Callum McGregor reveals who he backs to be Celtic manager next season

Skipper would welcome another season working under current regime

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has backed manager Martin O'Neill to remain in charge next season, insisting the 74-year-old has done an "unbelievable job" across his two spells this term.

O'Neill stepped out of retirement in October to take over the reins on an interim basis following the resignation of Brendan Rodgers before making way for Wilfried Nancy in December, only to return 33 days later following the Frenchman's sacking on a contract until the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman is credited with reviving the club's fortunes on each occasion and could end the season with a silverware double as Celtic trail Hearts by three points in their pursuit of a fifth successive Premiership title with five matches remaining having reached the final of the Scottish Cup with a 6-2 win over St Mirren in the semi-final last weekend.

McGregor is convinced O'Neill can deliver a successful end to the campaign and revealed the squad would welcome another season working under him and his assistants Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham, Gavin Strachan and Stephen McManus.

"I don't think anyone can actually underestimate how good a job he's done," McGregor said. "He's pulled the club back together when it was fractured. He's overseen a run of really good results, performances have been getting better all the time and that's from a disjointed start point.

"It's never ever been perfect but the job is to win games and he's shown that in spades. He's shown he can do it, he can get a tune out of the players and if you do go on and be successful, and hopefully we can go and win the cup as well, then what an amazing season.

"Then like you said it states his credentials for the job moving forward. The one thing that I will say is the players are fully behind him, Shaun, Fozzy, Gav, Mick - they've been amazing over their two spells so the players would ultimately back that and what a great job he would have done if we do stand with two trophies at the end of the season."

Celtic will be heavy favourites to lift the Scottish Cup when they face Championship side Dunfermline in the final on May 23 but are considered outsiders for the league title behind Hearts and Rangers. McGregor, however, does not see it that way.

"I don't think I'd be doing my job properly if I didn't think that we had the edge [in the title race]," he said. "Just because I'm a Celtic player, I see the Celtic team every day, I see how we train, I see what we've overcome already this season in terms of a little bit of adversity, changing manager twice, fought back from where we were, we're in another cup final, so I see enough signs that the team want to win, they can do enough to win.

"It's just about channelling that in the right way. We know that Hearts and Rangers are also good sides, we know that the top six are all good sides, so there is points to play for and obviously you have to win all your games if you want to win the league, so everybody's thinking the same and can we win enough of them to make sure that we're champions."
