Q&A Wendy Morrison of Acumen on a reader’s reluctance to address saving for retirement

Q I don’t plan to retire for another decade or so –what’s the point in planning now?

A Retirement is one of our ultimate milestones. You work hard, build up savings, and one day step away from employment into a phase when your life is your own.

On paper, it sounds straightforward; in reality, it’s anything but.

The assumption that simply working hard and saving diligently will get you there overlooks the sheer number of financial decisions along the way – buying a house, changing careers, starting a family, taking on debt, or even choosing to work less.

These decisions are usually made without seeing the bigger picture. Short-term, they feel manageable, long-term, when you factor in inflation, investment returns, and your evolving lifestyle, the outcomes can look very different. That’s where planning makes the difference, by replacing guesswork with clarity.

Early planning isn’t about predicting every twist and turn, it’s about understanding how the choices you make today could affect tomorrow. For example, with average returns a 30-year-old investing £250 per month could build a pot of more than £250,000 by age 65. Start ten years later, and you would need to invest more than double that each month to reach the same outcome. Compounding rewards time, and the earlier you act, the more powerful it becomes.

It also helps to remember the realities of retirement. According to the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association*, to fund a “comfortable” retirement, a single person would need almost £44,000 per year. Yet research shows the average pension pot for those aged 55-64 is under £140,000**. Planning early can help bridge this gap before it becomes unmanageable.

And it’s not only about avoiding a shortfall, planning can also help you live more fully today, secure your savings are on track. Equally, if a plan shows you are underfunded, it gives you the chance to course-correct while your earnings, and therefore saving potential, are highest.

The worst-case scenario is reaching your intended retirement age and facing an unpleasant surprise. By starting now, you give yourself flexibility to adapt if things don’t go as expected, and the confidence of knowing that every decision along the way is an informed one.

Good financial planning gives you the clarity to make conscious choices, the flexibility to adapt, and the reassurance you have done everything you can to live the retirement you want.
