If visiting the Outer Hebrides is on your bucket list then read on… here’s how to plan the perfect trip and make the most of your adventure.

Time has its own pace in the islands – and if you are looking for an authentic experience of Hebridean life you can’t beat a road trip to truly visit the Outer Hebrides.

The Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles) is a 130-mile-long chain of islands – of which 12 out of 70 are inhabited. The main islands include Lewis and Harris (the largest after Lewis), Uist, Benbecula, and Barra.

With white sand beaches, rugged landscapes, scenic villages, empty roads, a string of causeways and interisland ferries, getting from one end to the other is an integral part of any trip – traversing these stepping stones makes the trip about the journey as the destination. And along the way you can get to taste some of the freshest food on the planet, not to mention the distinctive drinks that have made Scotland famous including whisky distilleries and Harris Gin.

Food fresh from countryside and ocean

And whilst nothing prepares you for the breathtaking beauty of this archipelago, the islands are also a treat for the tastebuds.

Islanders use what is around them to produce sensational, sustainable and seasonal produce, which has unique characteristics making it big on flavour and low on air miles – and the easiest way to ensure you don’t miss a morsel is to follow Eat Drink Hebrides Trail.

Expect the unexpected – the best langoustines may not be found at a fine-dining restaurant, but a roadside shack, where they’re plucked from the ocean and shucked before your eyes. Restaurants too make the most of nature’s abundance, showcasing local food and produce on their menus.

For the meat-eater there is lamb, beef and venison which will have spent time out on these wild hills, moors or machair. Famous names like the protected-status Stornoway Black Pudding tastes even better in the place where it’s made – it’s a must-try on your Scottish breakfast.

There’s fresh fish and seafood from the ocean right on your doorstep, but here islanders have spent years perfecting the art of preserving their food – so expect expertly smoked fish such as salmon and mackerel too.

From hand-dived scallops to langoustine and lobster, you’ll find an abundance of seafood caught and served across the region.

Producers here use what nature provides – seaweed doesn’t just make its way onto your plate, but into skincare products, and the wool from those sheep led to Harris Tweed.

There’s a mustard-maker, bakers and crofts too producing their own goods. Whilst you won’t find many big supermarkets here you will find village shops and artisan producers selling local produce and honestly boxes: baking, eggs, vegetables and arts and crafts will often be for sale on the roadside, just take what you need and leave the money in the tin.

The Visit Outer Hebrides site even offers tips to help you forage sustainably for your own food.
