Cyber-attacks are a growing worldwide problem, but in Scotland there’s a company with global reach providing local expertise – meet Arctic Wolf.

Recent attacks on the Co-op and M&S brought home to ordinary people and businesses how much damage security breaches can do, and how quickly they can escalate.

It has heightened awareness too in organisations, which are looking for ways to improve their Cybersecurity. But with global threats evolving all the time, how can companies be best prepared and stay ahead of bad actors?

We spoke to Connor Milligan, Enterprise Account Executive in Scotland, to find out more about Arctic Wolf, and what makes its approach of offering global protection with local expertise and solutions so effective.

What makes Arctic Wolf stand out?

“We’re a human-led service,” he said. “Our platform is underpinned by AI that can process trillions of events as they happen in order to spot a potential threat as early as possible; then we have the human expertise with vast experience to hone in on that threat and verify it before troubling our customers, with human-led containment & remediation capabilities as part of our immediate response.

“Arctic Wolf has built its own cloud-based platform, the Aurora Platform, which is designed for scalability and automation of threat detection, response, and remediation” Connor explained. “The real key to our success is the expertise and scale of the people we have, underpinned by that technology.”

In technical terms Arctic Wolf sees all threats from a datalake formed of over 10,000 customers (typically MSSP’s have 10-100), giving access to over 8 trillion Cybersecurity related data points per week. It has the extensive human expertise (over 1,000 Security Operations Centre engineers and analysts) necessary to understand them – empowered by efficiency from AI built-in to its Aurora Cloud Platform to find the needle-in-the-haystack without having to waste time on clear false-positives.

Arctic Wolf has been supporting businesses across Scotland for over three years but the parent company was founded in the US back in 2012. Its rapid success has meant sustained double-digit growth with swift expansion globally and it has been recognised by industry analysts and experts as a leader in not just managed detection and response, but Security Operations as a whole.

Arctic Wolf strikes fast

“Because we are at such scale if something new happens to a customer in one country, we can act on that to update our detection logic globally to protect thousands of our customers who might be at risk of the same kind of attack – it means we can stay ahead of the curve when it comes to Cyber-attacks.”

Not only does this help them keep one step ahead of threats, but that scale and reach puts them ahead of their competitors too, says Connor.

What types of business use Arctic Wolf?

The firm acts as Security Operations partner for a wide range of businesses from small to medium enterprises with around 100 users to ones with over 40,000.

There are a range of core services offered but they can be customised for each company’s needs and risks. “The idea is we augment what they have already to be the security experts in the company, providing Security Operations 24/7/365 and ongoing pro-active guidance to lower their risk.”

Early detection is key

Arctic Wolf are industry-best at early detection. For most businesses the threat from Ransomware and similar malware or viruses is a case of when and not if it happens. Only true Security Operations providers, like Arctic Wolf, with broad visibility of your whole environment and the scale to respond quickly can stop these early in the attack chain – before critical damage is done.

In-house systems and safety in numbers

With the in-house SIEM capability built in to the Aurora Cloud Platform, Arctic Wolf customers do not have to rely on a third party SIEM tool with the unpredictable costs, complexity and maintenance requirements they bring.

“This means we can cross-correlate security telemetry from across our customers’ whole Cyber-attack surface, with memory from in-built default Log retention rather than dumping anything but the most recent (often Endpoint-centric) Logs from the working investigation set.

“This gives us the best context and broadest visibility of what’s going on across Network, Identity, Endpoint, SaaS and Cloud sources to truly understand if there’s a threat and be able to accurately verify it quickly” said Connor.

And there’s even more benefits to having built such a large base. “No Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) has the resources to build Security Operations at our scale,” said Connor. “There are assurances in using Arctic Wolf compared to MSSPs or other vendors who may not always be around.”
