These are just some of the sayings that will probably leave you scratching your head if you’re not from Scotland.
We asked people to suggest words and phrases you’ll only understand if you grew up in Scotland, and we received hundreds of suggestions.
Below are just some of the sayings that prove what a rich language Scots speakers have at their disposal, from insults to friendly invitations.
How many of these do you recognise?

5. Mony a mickle maks a muckle
This phrase, suggested by Margaret Garvie, is similar to the expression 'take care of the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves'. A mickle is a small amount, while a muckle is a large quantity, so if you focus on gathering the mickles, you'll soon have a muckle. | AFP via Getty Images Photo: Leon Neal

6. Awa and cuddle yer humph
This saying, suggested by Donald Lewis, is a colourful but usually lighthearted way of telling someone to get lost | Getty Images Photo: George Marks/Retrofile

7. You’re lookin’ peely wally
This isn't a phrase you want to hear, as it means you're looking pale and sickly. It was suggested by Gillian Stewart. | Getty Images Photo: Picture Post/Hulton Archive

8. No like that, yah Dunderheid
Another phrase you don't want directed at you. A dunderheid is a fool or idiot, though it's a relatively inoffensive term. This saying was suggested by Daniel Nicolson. | Getty Images Photo: Larry Ellis Collection
