HUNDREDS of people turned out to welcome the US Navy’s supercarrier USS Theodore Roosevelt as she sailed into Stokes Bay yesterday.
The gargantuan ship, dubbed the ‘Big Stick’ arrived for a five-day long visit to the British Isles as part of her round-the-world deployment.
With a crew of over 5,000 sailors, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is accompanied by missile destroyer USS Winston S Churchill.
The 1092ft-long supercarrier is too big to fit inside Portsmouth’s harbour entrance.

She is capable of sailing at 30+ knots (around 35+ mph) and carries 90 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.
The ship has won over 30 awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, the NATO Medal, four Battle Efficiency Awards and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.
