A LORRY driver has died in a crash on the A9 at Berriedale Braes, north of Helmsdale, Police Scotland said today.

The 41-year-old’s vehicle overturned around 11pm yesterday, with no other vehicle involved. He was named locally as Bruce Cormack.

The A9 was closed, forcing Dingwall-bound referendum ballot boxesto take a lengthy detour via Melvich on the north coast, which delayed the result of the Highland count by several hours.

This led to the official Scotland-wide referendum result being delayed till after 8am.

A police spokesman said: “Sadly, as a result of the collision, police can confirm a 41-year-old man who was driving the vehicle has died.

“His next of kin have been informed of the matter.”
