Whether you live in Scotland or are coming here for the first time, Conde Nast Traveller has rounded up a list of the top 12 best places to visit in the country.
Conde Nast wrote: “The country is home to some of Europe's most dramatic scenery. Mist-shrouded mountains tumble down onto lush green lands sculpted by rushing rivers, mirror-like lochs and heather-strewn moors, which in turn melt into golden sands and sensational seas.
“The mainland is peppered with lonely bothys, crumbling castles and world-renowned hotels, while the smattering of fairytale islands along the coastline are remote escapes where you'll feel as though you're on the edge of the world.”

5. Glen Coe
Glen Coe earned a spot on the list. Conde Nast said it wasn't just the box-office movies shot there (Harry Potter, Skyfall, Braveheart, Highlander) that encourage impulses of adventure. They added that it was also the craggy-faced Munros (hills over 3,000ft) and the adjoining valleys — with few coming close to Glen Etive for centrefold beauty. | Getty Images

6. Braemar and the Cairngorms
A village of steadings, Conde Nast told readers that Braemar is the gateway to both Cairngorms National Park and the Caledonian pine estate and castle of Balmoral. They said: "There’s a nature is king vibe throughout — days are spent in muddy boots on hiking trails, or wader-deep in the salmon-stocked River Dee." | Tim Graham/Getty Images

7. Loch Ness
Loch Ness was also named on the Conde Nast list. They said it remains a place of "good-natured, family-friendly fun". They recommended visitors to tackle the Loch Ness 360° Trail, an 80-mile activity trail for hikers, trail runners and riders made up of two separate trails, or venture west into elemental Glens Affric, Cannich and Moriston, where the story of rewilding is at its most remarkable. | AFP via Getty Images

8. Northwest Highlands
Conde Nast said the rippling mountains and moors in the northwest Highlands would "have you believing in fairies and monsters". They recommended visitors to quickly get a taste for life in coastal towns by going to places like Torridon, Kinlochewe and Ullapool. For beaches, they said to put Clachtoll and Achmelvich at the top of your list. | Getty Images
