A teenager from Afghanistan who arrived in Scotland in 2024 unable to speak English is celebrating six National 5 passes.
Masi Aymaq, 17, missed four years of school because of the conflict and his family relocated from Afghanistan to East Renfrewshire two years ago.
Masi joined Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns in S2.

At the time of his arrival, he required English as an Additional Language (EAL) support to help him settle into school life, develop his language skills, and take part in classes.
Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country, culture, and education system, teachers say Masi has demonstrated resilience and determination.
With the support of staff, he began to build confidence and integrate into his classes.
And today - just two years after arriving in Scotland - he was among the young people across Scotland celebrating exam results as he secured six passes at National 5.

Qualifications Scotland (QS) has heralded a record-breaking performance at National 5 in S4 and East Renfrewshire Council has marked its best ever result for S5 pupils attaining five or more Highers.
Masi said: “When we had to leave Afghanistan because of the troubles I then didn’t go to school for four years.
“And when I arrived in Scotland, I didn’t speak or read any English.
“The school has been really great and I’ve enjoyed being here.
“The teachers really helped me out and I’m so proud with the results I’ve got.”
