MSPs are set to battle it out over who is the Scottish Parliament’s top dog at the annual Holyrood Dog of the Year competition.
Organised by The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust, the event raises awareness of the issues affecting man’s best friend today and highlights the unique relationships between MSPs and their dogs.
This year’s competition is all about celebrating the unique bond between humans and their canine companions and the positive impact that dog ownership can bring into our lives.
The event also encourages open dialogue on dog welfare issues, as well as providing an opportunity for MSPs to meet with experts to discuss all aspects of the canine world.
Judging will be held at the Scottish Parliament Gardens on Monday, April 29, from 10am. Judges will speak to the MSPs about key dog welfare issues and considering each dog’s canine clout before casting their votes and deciding on who will get their paws on the trophy
Politicians and their pups can try out a range of different exercises and agility with their dogs on the friendly ‘paw-sault course’ which includes jumps for dogs of all sizes, a short tunnel and weave poles.
We’ll then find out the winning MSP and dog, who has landed second and third place - and the winner of the ‘pawblic’ vote.
Here’s who is in the running - and why their MSP owners think they deserve the title. You can vote for your favourite here.

5. Jamie Halcro Johnston and his Dogs Trust Companion
The Highlands and Islands MSP said: "My Dogs Trust former rescue dog and I should be crowned Holyrood Dog of the Year 2024 because of my unwavering commitment to shining a light on the countless other rescue dogs waiting for their chance to shine, to be rescued and to find their forever home. Together we represent the power of adoption and the profound impact a second chance can have on both a dog and its human companion." | Contributed

6. Christine Grahame and Bagel the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP said: "In my opinion, there is not a more deserving winner. From her coming into the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home at death's door and in so much pain, being blind, deaf, and malnourished to now being a happy, healthy little dog with her sight and hearing back, her journey has been amazing. Despite all she has been through she is the most loveable and friendly little dog and for that reason deserves to be crowned Holyrood Dog of the Year." | Contributed

7. Jenni Minto and Jim the Border Collie
The Argyll & Bute MSP said: "Jim is handsome, smart, good fun and affectionate. He's a great advert for the joy that a dog can bring to people. " | Contributed

8. Shirley-Anne Somerville and Oscar the Cockapoo
The Dunfermline MSP said: "He's everything a dog should be. He's a companion, a friend and a ray of sunshine. He'd love the chance to share those skills with anyone else who needs a smile brought to their day." | Contributed
