Police in Edinburgh discover gun and ammunition in wooded area with investigation launched
Police in Edinburgh have discovered a gun and ammunition in a wooded area, with an investigation having been launched into whether it was used in a crime.
Officers searched a wooded area near to Niddrie Mains Road in Edinburgh on Thursday, March 12, and discovered a firearm and ammunition. Police Scotland said that it is yet to be determined if the weapon was used in a crime, adding the weapon will now undergo stringent forensic analysis to establish any wider connections.
The recovery is part of ongoing investigations into serious and organised crime across the central belt of Scotland.

Detective Chief Inspector George Calder said the recovery was a “significant blow” to organised crime groups.
He continued: "I have no doubt this firearm would have been used in violence, which would have resulted in serious injury, or worse.
"I hope this latest find helps to reassure the community of our continued resolve to target those involved in organised crime and demonstrates our commitment to dismantling these groups.”
DCI Calder said that the public should rest assured that a ‘significant level of work’ is ongoing in efforts to disrupt criminal networks, adding that the force is ‘never complacent’ when it comes to serious organised crime.
He continued: "We continue to work closely with our colleagues in partner agencies and the public, sharing information, resources and intelligence in stamping out this illegal activity. This is in line with our commitment to achieving the aim and vision of Scotland's Serious Organised Crime Strategy Taskforce."
It is understood that the discovery is not linked to Operation Portaledge.
