Why Scotland should get excited about UK's 2035 Women's World Cup bid
The last Women’s World Cup attracted record crowds and by 2035 the game is likely to be even more popular
In 2023, a total of nearly two million fans attended games at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, compared to 3.4 million spectators who watched the men’s World Cup finals in Qatar a year earlier.
A clearly delighted Sarai Bareman, Fifa’s chief women's football officer, said: “Over the past few weeks, we have witnessed record-breaking crowds, significant global broadcast audiences and staggering digital metrics, highlighting the truly global impact of this ground-breaking event... This momentum is unstoppable.”

The women’s game has become one of the most important sporting success stories of recent years and looks set to go from strength to strength. So if the UK succeeds in its bid to host the World Cup in 2035, it is almost certain to be a very big deal indeed.
With Hampden Park and Hibs’ Easter Road stadium among the potential venues, Scotland can look forward to taking its place in a truly global spotlight – and the chance for the Tartan Army to strut its stuff at a major tournament on home soil. We can hardly wait. Fingers crossed!
