As a nation, Scotland should be inspired by world-beaters like Ian Winship to be more active

“I run because it keeps me sane, keeps me fit and it keeps me out of trouble.” The 90-year-old Ian Winship’s explanation of his dedication to running should be a manifesto for our times.

Winship, who completed the Cumbernauld 10K last month in a world’s best time for his age group of one hour, four minutes and 37 seconds, has now been presented with a special trophy by the race organisers.

He is living proof of the beneficial effects of exercise and should act as an inspiration for a nation with some serious health problems, mental and physical.

After all, if a 90-year-old can run a 10K, there are few reasons why the rest of us could not do so too. Admittedly, Winship is a former paratrooper but you don’t have to beat him, simply join him. And if there are reasons why running is not possible, most of us can walk or wheel.

According to Scottish Athletics, our Masters athletes are “brilliant at the moment”. And if we know what’s good for us, where the older generation leads, the rest of us should follow.
