Hero's welcome for charity rowers in Scotland a far cry from 'vigilante-style' suspicion in Norfolk

Rupert Lowe MP is now best known for mistaking charity rowers for ‘small boat’ migrants

Emergency! Someone call the Royal Navy! Someone light the coastal beacons! Ah, no, sorry... for a moment, we found ourselves possessed by the spirit of Rupert Lowe.

Briefly a Reform MP, Lowe now sits as an independent after falling out with his party colleagues. However, he’s much better known as the MP who mistook charity rowers attempting to circumnavigate Britain for migrants in a ‘small boat’ while they were off the coast of Great Yarmouth. “Authorities alerted, and I am urgently chasing,” he wrote on social media.

The Row4MND crew – Aaron Kneebone, Liz Wardley, Matt Parker and Mike Bates – has now arrived in the Firth of Forth, where we are delighted to report they received a hero’s welcome and not the “almost vigilante-style” attention they got from people who followed them along the shoreline in Norfolk. Bates reported that “the best comment was the one asking where the Royal Navy were when you need them”. As he’s a former Royal Marine, the joke was on them.

If your default is to always treat strangers with suspicion, you’re unlikely to make new friends.
