Gibson travelled to Scotland for a similar event in 2022. During the trip he visited Mr Singh’s India restaurant after arriving at Glasgow airport where he had dinner after being greeted by owner Satty Singh. That was first time the Hollywood star, who famously played William Wallace in the hit movie, had been in Scotland since the film’s premiere was held at Stirling Castle in 1995.

From June to October 1994, Braveheart was shot on location in Scotland and Ireland. Scottish locations used for filming, primarily in the Highlands, included key scenes shot in Glen Nevis, representing Lanark village, Glen Coe for the opening battle scene and scenic views over Loch Leven and the Aonach Eagach ridge.

Most battle scenes, including Stirling Bridge, were filmed in Ireland after the Irish government offered to supply 1,600 army reserves as extras. At an event last year, Gibson said that while filming in Scotland was “a fantastic experience”, the ground was not firm enough for the big battle scenes.

The film was an international hit and won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director honours for Gibson.

The film’s cast included Ian Bannen as Robert the Bruce’s father, Tommy Flanagan in an early role, James Cosmo as a Wallace ally, Angus Macfadyen as Robert the Bruce and Catherine McCormack as Wallace’s tragic love, Murron. Brian Cox had a memorable cameo as Wallace’s uncle Argyle, Brendan Gleeson played Wallace’s lifelong friend Hamish, Glaswegian David O’Hara played an Irishman, Stephen, and Peter Mullan featured in a battle scene.

When the film was released, Greenock actor James Cosmo said: “This is the best and most important film Scotland has ever made, both politically and emotionally.”
