Helicopters and sound of gunfire warning for Murrayfield as military and police prepare for training exercise

A training exercise will mean the public may see armed police and military personnel arriving at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield stadium on Tuesday, along with military helicopters and the sound of gunfire.

Police Scotland issued the warning, saying it was working with the military on Exercise Kukri Dawn, led and managed by the RAF, which began on February 23 and runs until March 13.

Tuesday’s schedule will see armed policing involved in a firearms training scenario at Murrayfield, which will include blank ammunition being used between around 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

The police said the exercise was not in response to the current situation in Iran. Exercise Kukri Dawn is an established training programme, which took place twice in 2025 and has been planned for months.

They said one of the objectives was to improve and test how the military work with the police. “Exercises are a crucial way for different organisations to learn, share knowledge and work well together. It’s important for exercises to be as realistic as possible to fully test a multi-agency response. The public should rightly expect Police Scotland, alongside other organisations, to practice and strengthen our response to major incidents.”

There will be no public access to Murrayfield during the exercise and police said nothing would be seen once those involved were inside the grounds. Residents in the area surrounding the stadium have been notified.
