9. Roslin Glen
Roslin Glen Starting at Rosslyn Chapel - which attracts thousands of tourists in summer thanks to its starring role in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code - the easy-to-follow Roslin Glen walk also takes in the River North Esk, an ancient gunpowder mill (pictured), and the dramatic ruins of the 16th century Rosslyn Castle. | Canva/Getty Images

10. Clyde Walkway
On a clear winter's day there's no better way to blow away the cobwebs than a walk along the River Clyde. Start at the Riverside Museum (entry is free if you want to pop in for a look at the transport exhibitions) and walk east, over and under the many bridges alongside sights such as the Finnieston Crane and the Hydro, to get to Glasgow Green. | Canva/Getty Images

11. Arthur's Seat
We're finishing back at Scotland's Capital with a winter hike up Arthur's Seat - the extinct volcano that towers over Edinburgh. There are a number of different routes up, but the ones with fewer lung-busting ascents take about 90 minutes. Why rush though? Take your time and make a day of it. It's a particularly popular walk on New Year's Day and is rumoured to be a fine cure for a hangover. | Canva/Getty Images
