Angel Adoree recipe: Plum and honey tea bread

Bone china? Check. Gingham tablecloth? Check. Now add this retro recipe for plum and honey tea bread from cook and author of Your Vintage Tea Party Journal, Angel Adoree
This is quite a healthy recipe as there is very little fat, and the sweetness comes from honey and the plums (flavours that go beautifully together). It’s also easy to make as there is no furious beating – just a few stirs with a wooden spoon and you’re done. Serve warm, as it is, or slathered with butter (which then mitigates the healthiness!). I like mine toasted, with a big mug of tea.
Ingredients
- 200g plain flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp salt
- 175ml buttermilk or low-fat yogurt
- 125ml honey
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 free-range egg, beaten
- 3 plums, stoned and chopped
- 60g walnuts, chopped
Serves: 4 Difficulty: Easy Time to cook: 60 mins
Method
1 Preheat the oven to 160C/Gas Mark 2½. Grease a 450g loaf tin. Sift the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, spices and salt into a large bowl and mix well.
2 Put the buttermilk or yogurt, honey, oil and egg in a separate bowl and mix until combined. Stir the buttermilk or yogurt mixture into the dry ingredients, then fold in the plums and walnuts.
3 Pour into the prepared loaf tin. The mixture should not fill the tin – leave a gap of about 3cm at the top. Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted near the centre comes out clean. Allow to cool a little in the tin before turning out and serve while still warm.
