For many local and visitors alike Edinburgh in August is all about catching a few shows at the various festivals and enjoying food and drink with friends.
Many of the biggest venues at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe offer a range of food and drink, but much of the seating tends to be exposed to the elements.
Sadly, the Scottish weather is anything but predictable - meaning you've not had the full festival experience until you've stood with a drink in a sudden downpour after watching a comedian in a converted lecture theatre.
Luckily, there are no shortage of (indoor) pubs to enjoy when the heavens open and you need some shelter - or if you just want to escape the crowds for an hour.
Here are 10 of the best that are easy to get to from one of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe's main hubs - The Pleasance Courtyard.

5. The Auld Hoose
If you're just looking for a pub that's easy to get to, turn left out of the Pleasance Courtyard, walk for six minutes, and you'll find The Auld Hoose. It's a hostelry with a lovely high ceiling and punk-centric jukebox and its own dedicated whisky menu. | Google Maps

6. Greenmantle
A seven minute trot up Nicolson Street from the Pleasance takes you to the Greenmantle Bar and Kitchen. It's the very definitionof a traditional Edinburgh bar with a wood-beamed ceiling and offering live music in the evenings and a menu featuring buffalo burgers. | Google Maps

7. Pilgrim Bar
If you fancy a cocktail in quirky surroundings, the Pilgrim has a bar made from old suitcases, recycled 1930s cinema seats and wood-clad walls. Just walk the six minutes to the Cowgate from the Pleasance. | Google Maps

8. Bannerman's
Just across the road from the Pilgrim is one of Edinburgh's most famous music pubs - Bannerman's. This bar also hosts free shows during the festival, so you might end up seeing something unexpected should you pop in for a pint. | Google Maps
