Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from the Affenpinscher to the Yorkshire Terrier.
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
And one thing you might like to consider is the so-called ‘velcro dogs’. These are breeds that just love to be around their owner so much that they might suffer psychologically if left along too often.
If you want a pet that will snuggle up to you and make you feel like the most important person in the world then they can be perfect - just be aware that your social life might suffer as nights in on the couch will likely be the dog’s preference.
Here are the 11 stickiest ‘velcro’ dogs.

5. Dachshund
Ask any Dachshund owner and they'll tell you how much their pets likes being left alone. These sausage dogs' favourite place is to be on their mum or dad's lap and would very much like to join them wherever they are going. | Canva/Getty Images

6. Australian Shepherd
Velcro dogs come in all types. Working dogs and herding dogs can be sticky with their owners due to them being pack animals. They see their human family as being their pack and like to keep them as close as possible at all times. 7. French Bulldog
Every step you take, every move you make, your Frenchie will be watching you. The UK's second most popular pet is unlikely to leave you alone for a second. | Canva/Getty Images

8. Border Collie
When it comes to close relationships between animals and humans, there are few closer than that formed between a Border Collie and its owner. Fiercely intelligent, these dogs are pack animals who can create a near-psychic bond that makes them perfect for herding sheep. Even as a household pet, they'll be as one with their family and will rarely want or need time along. | Canva/Getty Images
