Choosing to welcome a dog into your home - and your heart - is a big decision.
You are committing yourself to looking after an animal who will rely on you for pretty much everything for years to come.
It’s a daunting prospect for new dog owners and it’s worth doing your research before picking the perfect breed for you - there are 221 different pedigree dogs to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds, so there’s plenty of homework to do.
For inexperienced first-time owners it’s worth looking for a breed known to be easy to train, eager to please, naturally friendly and relatively low maintenance.
Here are 14 breeds that tick all those boxes.

9. Yorkshire Terrier
Those looking for a classic lapdog that will spend the majority of their time curled up as close to you/on top of them as possible should consider the Yorkshire Terrier. Make sure to be on top of your training though - unless you want your dog to be vocal and bother the neighbours. They'll also need regular visits to the groomer, which will cost a bob or two. | Canva/Getty Images

10. Bichon Frise
A great choice for those living in a city flat or apartment who are looking for a first dog, the Bichon Frise is a cloud-like bundle of fun that is hugely affectionate. They only need moderate exercise so a local park will do them fine most of the time - no need for a private garden. The only challenge is that, unless you're handy with a pair of clippers, they will need regular trips to the groomer to keep their coats immaculate - so factor that cost into your doggy budget. | Canva/Getty Images

11. Boston Terrier
Compact and friendly, Boston Terriers are low-maintenance and affectionate. They’re playful but not hyperactive, and their short coat requires minimal grooming - perfect for busy new dog owners. There's a reason they are nicknamed 'The American Gentleman', being as charming as that moniker would suggest. | Canva/Getty Images

12. Boxer
Instinctively protective towards their owners, the Boxer just adores human affection, making for an instantly adorable pet. They are also great with children and need very little grooming - ideal for those of us who would like a dog but are anxious about looking after their coat and spending a fortune on groomers. | Canva/Getty Images
