We’re a nation of cat lovers - with more than 10 million feline friends belonging to households across Britain.
It means they are the second most popular household pet after dogs, with a whole range of different breeds to choose from.
Acording to The International Cat Association there are 73 ‘standardised breeds’, along with a bewildering number of crosses.
So it’s worth doing a bit of research before choosing your perfect pet.
Here are the 10 most popular breeds of 2025 - according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association’s annual statistics.

5. Abyssinian
Up one spot from last year to take sixth place is the glorious Abyssinian. Taking its name from Abyssinia, the country now known as Ethiopia, where they were first exported to Britain, the Abyssinian used to be a fairly rare breed, but has rocketed in popularity in the last decade or so. Completing the top five most popular cat breeds is the elfin Devon Rex. Named after the part of England where they were first bred in the 1950s, every Devon Rex can be traced back to a cat called Kirlee belonging to owner Beryl Cox. 7. British Shorthair
The British Shorthair has dropped a spot since 2024 but still comes seventh. One of the oldest cat breeds, the British Shorthair is the most popular pet cat in its native Britain, accounting for nearly a quarter of pedigree pet cats. 8. Sphynx
Unlikely to be confused with any other breed due to its absence of hair, the Sphynx cat's lack of fur means it can easily get cold. This means it seeks out body heat so is known for loving cuddling up to its owner whenever possible. There are also issues with having no hair, with these cats predisposed to skin problems and sunburn. It's risen a place in the last 12 months, up to 8th spot. | Canva/Getty Images
