Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
While every person has different needs, for slightly older dog owners it can be worth looking for a dog with a particular range of attributes.
Breeds needing less in the way of grooming and exercise are easier to care for by those with mobility issues, while dogs with the right easy-going temparament make loyal and loving companions for people living alone.

9. Greyhound
Greyhounds are gentle and affectionate dogs that make a great companion for people later in life. Adopting one of the many adult Greyhounds looking for a new home can also mean there's no need to deal with an energetic and untrained puppy. | Canva/Getty Images

10. Pomeranian
Light enough to pick up and pop in your bag, you can take the tiny Pomeranian pretty much anywhere with you. Massively affectionate and eager to please, their idea of heaven is curling up on their owner's lap of an evening. Those short legs mean that the shortest of walks will feel like a marathon. | Canva/Getty Images

11. Shih Tzu
The low-shedding Shih Tzu is a lap dog that is happiest curled up on their beloved owner after a short walk down the local park. No need for long treks with these dogs who were bred for low-maintenance companionship. | Canva/Getty Images

12. Pekingese
The Pekingese could be considered the ultimate lap dog. This breed likes peace and calm, so is perfect for a quieter home free of children. They also tend to form a particularly strong relationship with one particular person, creating a special bond. | Canva/Getty Images
