6. Catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights – Isle of Rum
The Isle of Rum, Scotland's first International Dark Sky Sanctuary, offers an unforgettable getaway for Twixmas, and it’s one of the best destinations for stargazing and catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights. With no public lighting and only 40 full-time residents, the island’s skies are free from light pollution, providing unparalleled opportunities to admire the stars. Set within a National Nature Reserve, Isle of Rum offers a rich and varied habitat, allowing you to escape to a peaceful retreat for an awe-inspiring break. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, especially during the winter, as there are fewer ferries and accommodation is limited—ensuring a truly exclusive and off-the-grid experience. | Canva/Getty Images

7. Sparkle at the Irn-Bru Carnival – Glasgow
For when the weather isn’t particularly favourable, you can still find some winter sparkle at the Irn-Bru Carnival, Europe's largest indoor funfair. From the inflatable play area to arcade games like Spill The Milk and Hook-A-Duck along with bungee trampolines, Whac-A-Minion, face painting, and novelty stalls, there's an exciting range of activities to keep you entertained throughout the day. From 27th to 31st December, there’s also a variety of family-friendly activities including themed days, live music performances, treasure hunts and a special Unicorn Experience with ponies. | John Clark/Irn Bru Carnival

8. Enjoy festive theatre – St Andrews and Perth
Is it really Christmas without attending a festive panto? Check out Beauty and the Beast in The Byre Theatre St Andrews. Unlike traditional tales of true love, this story features a Belle who's not quite in the mood for romance, and her sassy mum who adds plenty of humour to the mix. With plenty of singing, dancing, and laughter, this panto promises fun for all ages. Mother Goose in Perth Theatre is another treat worth checking out. Mother Gabi Goose’s retirement plans are turned upside down when the new owner of McGregory’s Eggery, Greta Garbage, threatens to cage the geese and take everything Gabi holds dear, leading to an adventurous journey with her son and a quirky goose to save the day. Catch Beauty and the Beast from 28th November to 31st December, with performances at 2:00pm and 7:00pm and don’t miss Mother Goose, running from 29th November to 31st December, with performances at 1:00pm, 2:00pm (on selected days), and 7:00pm. | Byre Theatre
