Lying about four miles from Edinburgh city centre, Gilmerton gets its name from the Gaelic ‘Gille-Moire’, meaning ‘farmstead of the servant of the Virgin Mary’.
The land was owned by the Somerville family of Drum House in the 17th century before it passed to the Kinloch family in 1685.
It was a centre for coal mining from the 16th century and limestone mining in the 19th century, before the village expanded significantly post World War 2 with a series of new public housing estates.
